Boeheim credits 2009 loss to LeMoyne for renewed focus on zone defense

Sat, 30 Mar 2013 15:26:27 GMT — Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim says a preseason loss to Le Moyne College in 2009 convinced him to stick with his famous zone defense. Talking with reporters in Washington D.C., Boeheim said "We can't beat this team playing man to man - we better forget about playing man to man because they lost 10, 11 games in Division II that year." Boeheim said the loss might have "been the best thing that ever happened to me, because I stopped fooling around and we got more into practicing the zone." Syracuse coaches also eliminated the time they spent in practice working on man to man and spent additional time working on the complexities of the zone. Boeheim said he understand why more college teams are using zone defenses and having success with it.
