Rivalry renewed at the Garden- Your preview for Syracuse vs. UConn
It's Syracuse vs. Connecticut at Madison Square Garden.
What more could you possibly ask for?
Syracuse fans have an easy answer to that- A win.
Indeed, Orange fans were heartbroken when the Huskies won 52-50 after a very controversial foul was called on Tyus Battle that gave UConn two free throws for a two-point win.
Right now, the Orange isn't concerned about that. They are hoping for a win over a quality team away from the Carrier Dome. Something that could silence potential critics come March.
Even after a tough loss to Kansas, SU leading scorer Tyus Battle knew the importance of the rematch with the Huskies.
“Well I know the atmosphere is going to be great, tough loss today (against Kansas) but that's how the game goes and you've gotta bounce back and be ready to go on Tuesday” he said.
Battle and Frank Howard are the only players on the team to play significant minutes against the Huskies in that game last season.
For newcomers like Oshae Brissett and Howard Washington, both of whom followed the game from afar it represents their first chance to put their stamp on the rivalry.
“We’re just going to take it as another game, you know just go out there and fight. We know it’s going to be a dog fight. Coach (Boeheim) told us they’re going to come at us the whole game so we just got to be ready for it" Brissett said on Saturday.
"“I mean it's great, it's a great rivalry, I know a couple of those guys on that team, played against a few friends but we need to go in and get a bounce back win” said Washington.
On paper, you see similar records and certainly presume the close matchup that always seems to lie ahead in these Orange vs. UConn games.
UConn's two losses were to Arkansas (by 35 points) and Michigan State (by 20 points) while the Orange lost to just Kansas.
The Orange leads the all-time series 55-38 with its last win coming in the 2015 Battle 4 Atlantis.
Syracuse is favored to win by 5 points.
The game is scheduled to start at 9pm, shortly after Villanova and Gonzaga wrap up their game, both contests are part of the Jimmy V. Classic.
