Syracuse survives- Orange beats Villanova 27-26

Prince-Tyson Gulley runs for a 67 yard touchdown against Villanova

There's no way anyone could have predicted how this game will go.

No way.

Syracuse outlasted Villanova 27-26 in double overtime in the 2014 season opener for both teams on Friday night at the Carrier Dome.

The game was tied at 20 entering double-overtime when Syracuse faked the go-ahead field goal and CBA graduate Riley Dixon, instead of placeholding for the kick, stood up and passed for a touchdown.

That gave the Orange a 27-20 lead which Villanova quickly erased with a Johnny Robertson touchdown pass to make the score 27-26.

Instead of going for the tie game and a third overtime, Villanova Head Coach Andy Talley elected to go for the two point conversion and the win.

In the first half, Terrel Hunt, punched a Villanova player and was ejected from the game. That set the stage for redshirt freshman Austin Wilson to play the remainder of the contest.

Regarding that punch, Coach Shafer says the ejection was merited and Hunt will not face further punishment.

Prince-Tyson Gulley rushed for 100 yards in the win.

Syracuse is now 1-0, with time off to prepare for its next game, at Central Michigan on September 13.
