Syracuse Womens basketball shuts down Virginia Tech

The SU Womens basketball team wore jerseys with pink accents for "Play 4 Kay" in honor of the late Kay Yow, the former NC State coach.

The Syracuse Orange Womens Basketball team won in a big way Thursday night, pulverizing the Virginia Tech Hokies (11-11, 1-8 ACC) by the score of 73-48.

The conference win by the Orange gave them their 100th win inside the Carrier Dome, and propelled their record to 17-6 (6-4 ACC).

Brittany Sykes could not be stopped in the contest as she scored a career best 31 points in the blowout, while adding eight rebounds on 13-19 shooting from the floor.

Head Coach Quentin Hillsman had nothing but good things to say about Sykes after the game, saying she â??was phenomenal tonight and this is what we want to do: get out in transition, get up and down the floor and get easy bucketsâ??.

Just as Hillsman emphasized, Syracuse pulled in a complete group effort in this bout including outrebounding the Hokies 50-39 on the boards while also limiting their turnovers to 14, five less then Virginia Tech.

It wasnâ??t all offense for the Orange though, as the defense completely shut down the Hokies for much of the game. Behind six blocks and twelve rebounds from Briana Day, the defense severely limited the Hokies offense to a dismal 24% shooting percentage from the field, including a horrific 9% from behind the three-point line.

The Orange will look to use the twenty-five point win as motivation when they travel to South Bend on Sunday against the undefeated nationally ranked number two Fighting Irish.
