A rivalry is born- Syracuse Crunch outlasts Utica Comets in overtime

Utica, NY â?? The Syracuse Crunch edged the Utica Comets by way of a shootout tonight at Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Cedric Paquette scored the winner in the sixth round of the shootout to secure the victory for the Crunch.

The win moves Syracuse to a 3-2-1-0 record on the season. Crunch goalkeeper Cedrick Desjardins made 19 saves for his first win of the season. Utica goaltender Joacim Eriksson made 32 saves in defeat.

The Comets took their first lead in franchise history on a power-play goal from Colin Stuart 4:39 into the first period. The assists on the goal went to Yann Sauve and Zac Dalpe. Despite offensive pressure from the Crunch, Utica was able to take this 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Syracuse evened the score with 6:43 to go in the second period as forward Nikita Kucherov converted on the Crunchâ??s fourth power play opportunity of the game.

Syracuse outshot Utica in regulation 30-19 but Eriksson made 16 saves in the third period to help the Comets force overtime. The Comets didnâ??t manage a shot in extra time but Eriksson was able to stop three more Crunch opportunities to keep things tied and force a shootout.

Paquette scored in the game-winner in the sixth round while Desjardins stopped the last five Comet shooters. Tanner Richard also scored for the Crunch in the shootout.

The Crunch return to action on Saturday Oct. 26 when they host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for â??Pink in the Rinkâ?? night presented by Upstate University Hospital.
