The OCC women's basketball team put together a spirited comeback, but fell 58-57 to Northland Community Tech. College in the NJCAA Elite 8 on Thursday.
The Lady Lazers were down for much of the first half, trailing 39-28 going into the locker room. But, the fast-paced squad put together an amazing run in the second half.
Northland took possession with less than 30 seconds to play, but after several tries at a basketball, the ball squirted out of bounds and off of an OCC player with about 15 seconds to play.
But, with OCC playing suffocating defense, taking the ball out underneath their own basket was too tough for Northland, turning the ball over after their player stepped over the endline, giving OCC the ball down a point with 15 seconds left.
Jenn Deuel took the ball up the court, and made an effort at a shot, which didn't go in, after a scrum that ticked precious seconds off the clock, the ball bounced out to Allie Taylor who had a good look from about 12 feet, but as the horn sounded the ball went in and out of the basket, inches from a buzzer beating victory.
While the Lady Lazers will not play for the National Championship, they'll play West Georgia Technical College in a consolation game on Friday afternoon.
