The 17th Hole in our Best 18 Holes in Central New York series takes the CNY Central sports team to Camillus Country Club, where conditions are still in mid-season form despite a devastating fire on July 2nd.
The blaze destroyed the pro shop, restaurant, bar, locker rooms, golf carts and everything else in its path...except the golf course. With the course still in complete working order, it was open for play on July 4th, stayed open and is still in great shape since then.
"It would've been so easy to quit," Jivi Govender, owner of Camillus Country Club, says. "That would've been the easiest thing to do. But, that's just not the way my family operates. We just tried our best, and if you had to work a little bit harder you have to work a little bit harder, and our number one priority was to make sure we took care of our customers."
He says play has been steady with both members and non-members, and that the course is fully operational for public play.
We played the toughest hole on the course as a part of our series, the Par 4 1st Hole, roughly 380 yards. While it might seem short, it's the green that turns heads throughout the area.
"People talk about it," Govender says. "People have nightmares about this green, people have wanted to blow this green up, basically the slope from back to front is a little extreme."
