The Orange Zone co-host and SU basketball assistant coach Adrian Autry chatted with CNY Central's Niko Tamurian on Wednesday afternoon. The Orange is preparing for their first NCAA Tournament game against Western Michigan, taking place around 2:45 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. That game will be televised on CBS 5.
Coach Autry communicated what the team's psyche is this time of year.
"Guys are excited, this is the best time of year for these guys, it's what you work for all year for to get to this point," Autry said.
He also broke down Western Michigan, the 14-seed who won the MAC Conference Title looking to pull off an upset.
"They're a very good team, experienced team, they're led by 2 seniors, very, very good players...all-conference guys. They're a good team defensively and they shoot the ball so they pose a challenge, but all teams now in the NCAA Tournament are all good," Autry said.
Autry as well as several of the other players and coaches were asked about last year's team, who also struggled down the stretch, but still made the Final Four.
"It's something you can talk about, things can change at any time, just be ready to play. Last year we ran into a kind of similar scenario, losing a couple, but it didn't matter, we kind of banded together and that got us going so that's something you can pull from. It can be done, but you have to do it, but it can be done," Autry said.
