Crunch falls in Game One of Calder Cup Finals 3-1

The Syracuse Crunch lost the opening game of the Calder Cup finals 3-1 to the visiting Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday night. Grand Rapids now holds a 1-0 series lead. The Calder Cup Finals is a best-of-seven series.

Grand Rapids used their momentum from their 7-game series with Oklahoma City to jump out to a 1-0 lead early in the first period. After Crunch goalie Cedrick Desjardins made several saves during a sequence, the puck got out to Mitch Callahan who scored the first goal of the series.

1-0 remained the score until the third period, when Riley Sheahan scored to make it 2-0 Griffins. Just about a minute later, J.P. Cote answered to cut the lead to one.

The Crunch pulled Desjardins to put an extra skater on the ice late in the third, which is when Gustav Nyquist got an east open net breakaway goal to make the score 3-1 and ice the game. The Crunch and Griffins meet in Game 2 Sunday night at 6 p.m.
