The name "Powell" is considered royalty in not only Central New York lacrosse, but in the rest of the lacrosse world as well. Casey, Ryan and Michael Powell attended Syracuse University from the mid 90s to the mid 2000s, each leaving their mark, winning four national titles in the course of 10 years.
Today, Ryan Powell is back home in Central New York, once again on the lacrosse field, but this time with a different role, offensive coordinator on Kevin Johnson's staff for the Cazenovia College Wildcats.
"Coach Johnson and I have had a long standing relationship and he asked me to help out, it was something I was excited about saying yes to," Powell said
Wearing the famed Number 22, Powell was a four-time All-American at Syracuse University. After graduating in 2000, he moved on to Major League Lacrosse, where he was a two-time MVP. Powell also captained the 2010 gold medal USA lacrosse team. Moments that Powell's athletes, current Cazenovia College players, remember well...
"I remember watching all the Powell brothers growing up, they really made it fun to watch the sport, and I think they brought a lot of publicity and got a lot more people playing," Joe Delia, a sophomore at Cazenovia and a Baldwinsville High School graduate, said.
"It was always such a show," Patrick Boyle, Cazenovia senior and Henninger graduate, said. "The Powells made it seem so effortless to go out on the field and do what they did..it's really an honor to have him here at Caz."
The players believe the Powell name will attract more recruits to play for Cazenovia, while improvements like their new turf field at Cazenovia will continue to take the program to the next level.
The Wildcats are 3-1 so far this season.
