No matter what, SU would have faced a former member of the Orange on Saturday. The loser of the opening round game, Ohio State, featured former SU quarterback Greg Paulus as an assistant on Thad Matta's staff. On Dayton, former SU guard Allen Griffin also graces the sidelines as an assistant.
Coach Boeheim said in his press conference he thinks Griffin might not show it on the outside, but will have some Orange on underneath his suit during the game. Griffin said he still keeps in close touch with his SU family as well.
"I actually talk to Coach Boeheim's wife probably once a month," Griffin said. "I kind of leave Coach Boeheim alone during the season..he can be a little cranky, so I send Juli some text messages throughout the year, especially holidays and I just say hello, and I kind of keep track that way."
Griffin also commented on his relationship with SU assistant coach Adrian Autry, another former player.
"I talk to Adrian every day, pretty much. These guys text message us and say good luck and stuff like that and congratulations when we got the win, it's a family feeling. They're like family to me, but when we step between the lines, as a competitor I want our team to win just as much as they want their team to win."
SU takes on Dayton on Saturday night in the Round of 32 in Buffalo. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:10 on TBS.
