The 15th ranked Ithaca College Bombers and 8th ranked Cortland Red Dragons lacrosse teams advanced to the 2nd Round of the NCAA Division III Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
Ithaca actually trailed Montclair State 4-2 in the first half, but then scored 11 goals in a row to blow out the Red Hawks 13-4. West Genesee graduate Scott Sidnam, a sophomore, made 16 saves, holding the Red Hawks scoreless in the second half. Pat Slawta led the Bombers with four goals and an assist, while Jake Long chipped in two goals and an assist as well. The Bombers travel to top-ranked and undefeated RIT for Round 2 of the tournament on Saturday.
Just like the Bombers, SUNY Cortland also started off slow in their NCAA Tournament opener. Visiting Keuka scored two goals in the first five minutes of the contest. But, the Red Dragons scored four goals in a row to end the first quarter, then later went on a 10-goal run in the third quarter to blow out the Storm 20-6. Zach Hopps and Tyler Chin each led the Red Dragons with three goals and an assist apiece. Cortland will play Springfield College in their second round game on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
