The Morrisville Mustangs men's basketball team and the Ithaca College women's basketball team both advanced to the Elite 8 in the NCAA Division 3 basketball tournament on Friday.
Morrisville battled Richard Stockton College all game long, a back and forth battle with the Mustangs able to pull out an 88-81 victory when time expired. Jailaan Kinsey (J-D grad) and Brandon Hanks (Henninger grad) had 22 points apiece, with Kucjok Ater's (Bishop Grimes grad) seven rebounds making him the all-time rebound leader at Morrisville. The Mustangs will take on the winner of Amherst and Plattsburgh at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Elite 8. They are the first NEAC team to ever make it to the Elite 8.
Ithaca was down 41-32 to Amherst at the half, but rallied by shooting 56 percent in the second half, winning 74-71 in overtime. Geena Brady tied the game 64-64 with 36 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. The Bombers fell down a point in the overtime period, and trailed 71-70 with 28 seconds left. But, after a Dan Raymond timeout, Samantha Klie converted on a layup to give Ithaca the lead for good. It's the first NCAA Sweet 16 victory in program history, and they'll face the winner of Tufts and Castleton tomorrow at 5 p.m.
