MRI is in- Derek Jeter out until next week

NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter will miss the Yankees' weekend series against Minnesota with a strained right quadriceps, and New York cannot rule out a return to the disabled list.

After missing the first 91 games of the season because of a broken ankle, Jeter was activated Thursday and went 1 for 4 with an RBI groundout as the designated hitter Thursday against Kansas City. He injured the leg in his third at-bat.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Friday that an MRI showed a grade one strain.

New York is off from Monday to Thursday for the All-Star break, so the Yankees will have a week to decide whether Jeter has to go back on the DL.

Cashman says "we'll have to give it some time and see how he responds."

The 39-year-old shortstop broke his left ankle Oct. 13 in the AL championship series opener, then broke it again in April during his rehabilitation.
