Paulus, Jones work out for NFL scouts

April showers bring... pro scouts? That was the case Tuesday at the Carrier Dome where Greg Paulus and Arthur Jones worked out during Syracuse's second Pro Day. For Paulus, this was his second Pro Day of the spring, but it was the first for Jones who was looking to impress scouts in hopes of getting drafted. Former Syracuse players Lavar Lobdell, Mike Owen, and Paul Chiara joined them for the workouts. Paulus, in his lone year for the Orange, was able to compile some healthy statistics: throwing for 2,025 yards while amassing 13 touchdowns despite throwing 14 interceptions. The draft status for Paulus is a little murky. On his first Pro Day Paulus ran consecutive 4.89 40-yard dashes, which would put him outside of the top ten for quarterbacks at the NFL scouting combine. However, has Paulus ranked as the #45 quarterback in the draft. The story is a little bit different for Arthur Jones, the Orange's big defensive tackle from Endicott, NY. At this point last year Jones was projected as a late first round draft choice, but he tore his lateral meniscus late in the season and had to miss the last three games of the season. Jones was named to the All-Big East first team after his junior season. His numbers for his junior season were phenomenal: 60 total tackles (33 solo), but the mark of a good defensive tackle is what he is able to do behind the line and he did not disappoint, racking up 13 tackles for a loss including 3.5 sacks. Although being listed as the #2 defensive tackle in the 2009 draft (of which he did not participate), because of the knee inury his draft stock has dropped; various draft sources have Jones going anywhere in the draft from the second to the fourth round. Tuesday's Pro Day is extremely important to Jones because he had to miss the combine back in February in addition to missing the 2009 Senior Bowl. Jones rose to the occasion with the pressure of the draft on his hulking shoulders, even though he suffered a pectoral injury during his junior campaign. Both Jones and Paulus said they felt good about how they performed in front of the scouts, some of whom were in attendance for SU's first pro day. Jones has had meetings with the Buffalo Bills, and has meetings set up with the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons. The NFL Draft starts Thursday night, April 22.
