The Syracuse Chiefs (51-36) lost 3-2 to the Pawtucket Red Sox (46-44) in extra innings on Friday night in front of a sellout crowd at NBT Bank Stadium.
Syracuse actually held a 2-0 lead after the third, as Josh Johnson and Jeff Kobernus both had RBIs in the inning. Chiefs righty and top prospect A.J. Cole pitched decent in his second Triple A start, but Pawtucket got to him in the fifth. A Travis Shaw sac fly and then a Carlos Rivero single tied the game 2-2 after the fifth. Cole went five innings, giving up nine hits and those two runs. He struck out three Pawsox as well.
The game remained 2-2 until the 10th inning, when Deven Marrero doubled off Warner Madrigal, scoring Garin Cecchini. The Chiefs couldn't muster a miracle in the bottom of the inning, so Pawtucket spoiled the July 4th sellout, winning 3-2.
Syracuse and Pawtucket battle once again on Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium. First pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
