SU lacrosse wins thriller in the Carrier Dome in double overtime, qualifies for ACC Tournament

The SU lacrosse team celebrates after their double overtime victory over North Carolina

The #7 Syracuse men's lacrosse team beat #4 North Carolina 11-10 in double overtime on Saturday evening. With the win, the Orange qualifies for the ACC Tournament.

The Tar Heels jumped on the Orange early, taking a 3-0 lead. But, a combination of Kevin Rice and Billy Ward cut the deficit to 4-1, before UNC once again jumped ahead, leading 6-3 at the half.

Syracuse came out of the locker room on fire in the second half, winning the third quarter 4-1. The score tied 7-7 going in the fourth, the teams tied at 8-8 and 9-9, until a Jimmy Bitter goal made it 10-9 Tar Heels with 3:10 left to play.

After time trickled off the clock, and several timeouts in the closing minute, the Orange took the ball with 23 seconds to play and down 10-9. Kevin Rice made it happen once again, tallying a goal with eight seconds to play forcing overtime.

SU had some chances in the overtime period, but neither team could score, forcing double overtime.

A few minutes into the second overtime, Randy Staats started from behind the crease, finding Billy Ward, who scored the game winner, winning the game 11-10.

The Orange improves to 8-3 overall and 2-3 in the ACC. SU qualifies for the 4-team ACC Tournament with the victory.

The Orange are in action once again when they travel to Hobart on Saturday, April 19th.
