SU soccer goes 2-0 with 2-0 win over Hartwick

Junior Grant Chong watches his kick sail past the keeper for his first goal of the season on Monday night.

The 20th ranked SU soccer team improved their record to 2-0 with a 2-0 win over (0-2) Hartwick on Monday night.

This one held a little more importance for SU head coach Ian McIntyre, who played for four seasons at Hartwick and coached at the school for seven.

Both teams were held scoreless after the first half, with only a few scoring opportunities on each side. But, just five minutes into the second half, freshman Alex Halis sent a pass to junior Grant Chong down the sidelines into Hartwick territory, setting up a 1 on 1 opportunity for Chong. Chong made a move to the middle then set off a perfect slicing kick out of the reach of keeper Mateo Munarriz for the first score of the game.

Less than ten minutes later, junior Nick Perea got the ball in front of the box and sent the ball flying towards the goal, deflecting it off a Hartwick defender and over the head of Munarriz, giving the Orange the 2-0 lead, a lead they would keep for the rest of the game.

The Orange will take their 2-0 record on the road on Friday, as they travel to Virginia Tech for their first ACC contest.
