SU women's lacrosse battles, but falls to Maryland in National Championship

The SU women's lacrosse team (21-3) battled, but lost to the Maryland Terrapins (23-1) in the National Championship on Sunday night.

The Terps jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Orange proved they wouldn't go down without a fight. SU scored four straight goals, holding Maryland scoreless for more than 15 minutes in the process, to make the score 5-4 with less than ten minutes to play in the half. But, after SU's fourth goal, Taylor Cummings won the draw control and took the ball right to the goal, making it 6-4 Maryland. The Terps went into the half leading 9-6.

The two teams exchanged goals to start the half, with SU's Alyssa Murray scoring to cut the lead to 9-7. That's as close as the Orange got the rest of the game, as Maryland rattled off a 4-0 run to make the score 13-7 with less than 20 minutes to play.

That lead was 15-8 with 11:02 left, but the Orange had one last run in them. Senior Katie Webster, a CBA graduate, started the run with her third goal of the game. Amy Cross and Alyssa Murray followed with goals to make the score 15-12 with less than five minutes left. But, a combination of SU fouls and Maryland stalling resulted in the Terps running the clock out, securing their 11th National Title in school history.

In their final game in an SU uniform, Alyssa Murray and Katie Webster both recorded hat tricks. Sophomore Kayla Treanor had two goals and an assist.
