Syracuse lacrosse comes back...again...to beat Rutgers 12-11 on senior day
The Syracuse (9-2) men's lacrosse team came back from a five-goal deficit to defeat the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-11) 12-11 on Saturday afternoon.
On senior day, Luke Cometti, a senior, scored a career-high six goals and tallied one assist for the Orange, while classmate JoJo Marasco continued to set up his teammates, notching a career-high five assists and a goal.
The Orange found themselves trailing for virtually the entire game, including a 10-5 deficit at the beginning of the fourth quarter. SU then scored five goals in the next nine minutes, with four of those goals coming from Cometti.
After Cometti's goal tied it up at 10, Rutgers' Anthony Terranova scored to give the Scarlet Knights a one-goal lead with less than six minutes to play.
SU junior Derek Maltz answered with about two minutes to play, tying it at 11.
Rutgers took possession with less than a minute to go, but senior JoJo Marasco chased down Rutgers defender Andrew Parrilla on a fast break, knocking the ball out of his stick. Another senior, Brian Megill picked the ball up, took it the length of the field and dished to Maltz, who scored his third of the game to give the Orange a 12-11 advantage with 10 seconds to play.
Cazenovia graduate Joey Nardella won 18 of 26 faceoffs for the Scarlet Knights, but SU freshman faceoff specialist Cal Paduda came in the fourth quarter and equalized Nardella, winning the game's most important faceoff with ten seconds to play, locking in the SU victory.
The Orange is back in action against Hobart on Tuesday at the Carrier Dome, facing off at 7.
