Tempers flare as position battles heat up at SU spring football practice

The Syracuse Football team has just one week until their annual Spring Game, but the public got another glimpse of the 2013 squad on Sunday afternoon.

And just like spring sessions of the past, this one is full of position battles, as the athletes compete for a starting spot against Penn State on August 31st. Coach Shafer said at this point, Terrell Hunt and Charley Loeb have been the two quarterbacks with the best battle at the QB position, with John Kinder also showing flashes of brilliance. All of that could be a moot point though, with Oklahoma transfer QB Drew Allen on his way to Syracuse in the fall.

As for Sunday's practice, the team focused on several individual drills, but did end up scrimmaging, which ended up in some rising tensions between players, something Coach Shafer said was okay at this point in their preparation towards game one.

"I was really pleased with how the kids competed, we had to pull them off each other a little bit there at the end, which was a good thing," Shafer says. "So I love the competition, and am really enjoying coaching this bunch, they're getting stronger everyday in regards to playing the game the way it's meant to be played, hard-nosed, physical football...and I was pleased with today's practice."

SU will hold the annual Spring game at the Carrier Dome on Saturday, April 20, at noon.
