Three SU soccer players tallied their first career goals in the Orange's 4-0 victory over Colgate in Hamilton on Friday night. The 20th-ranked Orange move to 1-0, while Colgate falls to 0-1 in each team's first game of the season.
Both teams had chances in the first half, but the scored remained 0-0 until the 40th minute, when Jordan Murrell centered the ball into the box where Alex Halis capitalized with a perfect header to make the score 1-0. It was Halis' first goal of his career.
The score would remain 1-0 into the second half. In the 69th minute, in traffic, a falling Noah Rhynhart kicked one that wobbled in front of Colgate goalkeeper Liam Stapleton, who made the save, but deflected the ball back in front of Rhynhart, who got back up after falling and scored, giving the Orange the 2-0 lead. It was also Rhynhart's first career goal.
Less than two minutes later, Nick Perea set up Emil Ekblom perfectly on a run, with Ekblom able to get past one more Colgate defender and put the ball in the back of the net, for his first career goal.
His second career goal came minutes later, as he took a pass by Oyvind Alseth on the right side of the box and slid the ball past Stapleton, giving the Orange their fourth goal of the game, with SU eventually winning 4-0.
SU's next game is their home opener against Hartwick on Monday at 7 p.m.
