Thursday was a busy for the new Utica Comets franchise.
To start things off, the Comets named former Western Hockey League Coach and NHL veteran Travis Green as the franchiseâ??s first head coach. Green, who played 14 seasons in the NHL with five different teams, had been with the Portland (Oregon) Winterhawks of Western Hockey League since 2008. During his time with the Winterhawks, Green served as an assistant coach and assistant general manager in which he helped lead the team to 160 wins including three consecutive appearances in the WHL league finals and one league championship.
While the Comets named Green their coach, the American Hockey League announced what division they would be playing in. As this seasonâ??s champions Grand Rapids Griffins jumped to the Midwest Division of the Western Conference, the Comets filled the vacancy in the North Division of the Western Conference that the Griffins left. Utica joins the Toronto Marlies, Rochester Americans, Hamilton Bulldogs, and Lake Erie Monsters in the North Division.
