Back on top- West Genesee wins Section III Championship

West Genesee celebrates its Section III championship.

The king has returned.

After a brief, one season hiatus from the state playoffs the West Genesee boys lacrosse team is back in a place it became very familiar with.

Hoisting that famous yellow Section III banner as the Class A champion.

To some, it was a shock last year when Liverpool ousted West Genesee as the Section III champ.

Just as much though, this year, not many expected the Wildcats to beat top-seeded Fayetteville-Manlius.

The Hornets beat the Wildcats twice in the regular season and no doubt played their hearts out on Tuesday.

It just wasn't meant to be for F-M, which was undefeated before Tuesday.

Evidence of that, was when Ryan DaRin raced towards the net with time winding down and delivered a beautiful shot towards the goal.

It looked good, until at the last second it ricocheted off the post and rather than the Hornets celebrating the game went to overtime.

The game remained tied through an entire overtime period and half of another. That is, until West Genny's Dan Ginestro found room in front of the net and delivered the shot heard 'round Central New York.

With one swing of the stick, West Genesee was back on top of the CNY lacrosse world.

The Wildcats now await the winner of Corning and Ithaca from Section IV, that regional game would be played later this week.
