Alex Bono can do it all.
The Baldwinsville senior soccer goalie stopped every single shot that came his way in Monday's Section III Class AA Championship. That's all of regulation, plus two 15 minute overtime periods. Not only was he stout in net, but with the game on the line, he scored the game clinching goal in penalty kicks, delivering the Bees to the New York State Tournament.
Some fans may have wondered why Bono, the goalie, was taking a shot in the penalty kick session. Coach Tim Scheemaker says it's all about confidence they have in Alex. In fact, Alex is such a force defensively, it allows the Bees to be more aggressive offensively.
Scheemaker also says that Bono is the vocal leader of the team. He's a team captain, who told me that moment of scoring the game winning goal was a dream come true, especially for a netminder, but he's keeping his team focused on the task at hand.
That task is battling Shenendehowa from Section II in the New York State quarterfinal matchup.
Bono is so focused on that game, I even asked him about writing the perfect ending to his senior campaign, expecting a state championship answer. Alex though, the foundation and leader of this team wouldn't allow himself to think about anything past Shenendehowa, and is making THAT his goal. Taking thigs one game at a time, and then, hopefully, answering the question with the answer of "Winning a State Championship."
Congratulations to Alex Bono, this week's CNY Central Athlete. Good luck to the Bees as they represent Central New York against the rest of the state.
