Toyota High School Athlete- Liverpool's Ben Petrella
Last Saturday, Petrella ran one of the best races of his career to date. Petrella led the way for the Warriors by placing 6th in the country at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon. His finish propelled Liverpool to a 10th overall team finish.
His finish time of 15 minutes and 15.1 seconds in the 5K race has earned Petrella the distinction of this week's Toyota Athlete of the Week. The senior also leads by example in the classroom at Liverpool. Petrella is the salutatorian of his class and also dedicates his time to the school band where he plays the trumpet. After the 2015-16 school year, Petrella will take his talents to West Point where he'll participate in cross country for Army.
"Once I decided that it was just a matter of how much time and effort could I put into the sports and how good could I be?" Petrella said.
"I just want to be the best runner I can be and as I student, I want to be the best student I can be," added Petrella.
His coach, Tracey Vannatta, is equally as proud of the young man Petrella has become.
"He's probably one of the best leaders we've ever had on this team. Everybody looks up to him not just because he's fast, that's part of it but it's because it's the type of leader and human being that he is," said Vannatta.
