Despite four scoreless innings from Scott Blewett, Auburn upsets B'ville in baseball quarterfinals

Auburn upset defending state champs Baldwinsville on Saturday

The defending Class AA champions in baseball, the Baldwinsville Bees, were upset by Auburn 2-1 in the Class AA quarterfinals on Saturday.

MLB prospect Scott Blewett pitched for the first time in a couple weeks, holding the Maroons scoreless in four innings of work.

But, with the score knotted up 0-0 in the fifth, and Blewitt off the mound, the Maroons rallied, with a Baldwinsville error resulting in the first run of the game scored by Brandon Fasce. An infield single later in the inning by John Rizzo scored another, giving Auburn a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 5th, B'ville rallied as well. A double by Niko Mirizio gave the Bees a chance to get on the scoreboard. Next batter up Kevin Paul drove a single to centerfield, but Nicholas Petrosino threw a bullet to home plate, gunning down Mirizio and ending the rally. B'ville would scratch a run in the 6th, but it wasn't enough as Auburn went on to win 2-1. Justin Valentino was fantastic on the mound for Auburn, throwing six innings, giving up six hits and allowed just one run.

Auburn, the 7-seed, will play 3-seed Liverpool in the semifinals on Monday. That game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at OCC.
