Getting Defensive- West Genesee lacrosse shuts down Cazenovia

The offensive effort from West Genesee might've left Head Coach Mike Messere desiring more.

The work on defense? That was top notch.

Powered by plentiful saves from freshman Luke Staudt and stifling play from all of its defensive stars, West Genesee beat mighty Cazenovia 6-1 on Tuesday night.

Mind you, Caz won Section III in 2016, so this is a powerful team that the Wildcats all but shut down.

"It was great, we all played great team defense and our goalie (Staudt) definitely helped us out" says senior defenseman Marcus Hudgins.

Considering that Staudt is a freshman playing for one of the most storied high school lacrosse teams in the nation, that's pretty special.

"Pretty excited, but we have a huge game Saturday against maybe the best team in the section, we have to look forward to that and take the good from this and move on" Luke said.

It would appear, he already has the West Genesee business-like approach down-pat already.

The game on Saturday that Staudt is referring to is Jamesville-DeWitt on the road, another powerful test early this season for the Wildcats.

For the rest of this week, they can take stock knowing their defense is stout, and the offense should only get better throughout the spring.
