Jamesville-Dewitt, Hamilton win Girls Basketball championships
The theme of the night was "3".
And not just because Carly O'Hern was raining three point shots on Jim Boeheim Court in the Carrier Dome (although, she did make five of them).
Thursday night's Class A Section III Championship for Jamesville-Dewitt marks the third time in a row the Red Rams have won it all.
The Red Rams showed us a glimpse of the future, too. As this squad that features just two seniors beat Whitesboro for the Class A crown.
O'Hern finished with 27 points and for her efforts was named as the Class A Tournament MVP. J-D now moves onto the New York State Regional Playoffs, where they'll meet a team from Section IV.
In the first game of the night, the number three is absolutely the lucky charm.
You see, Oriskany won the Class D Section III title in its third try in as many years. The 53-49 overtime victory over rival Oriskany marked success, finally, in their third meeting with the Redskins. Oriskany handed Hamilton losses in both regular season meetings, the only blemish on the Emerald Knights' record.
Oriskany led Hamilton 42-33 late in the game, before the Emerald Knights made a big rally behind eventual MVP Jessica Welsh (who, by the way wears #3).
Overtime was forced when Oriskany missed a baseline jumper at the buzzer. In the extra session, Welsh couldn't be stopped scoring at ease and earning three steals.
