The 2-seed in Class C-2 Bishop Grimes Cobras beat 6-seed Weedsport 3-1 on Tuesday night in the semifinals in NBT Bank Stadium. The Cobras will go on to the C-2 Championship on Wednesday at Delutis Field in Rome.
The Cobras got on the board early, as a Chris Schad line-drive double turned into a Wyatt Myers RBI single, giving Grimes the 1-0 after the first.
It would remain 1-0 until the fourth inning. After Weedsport started the inning off with a single, Alex Okal drilled a triple to tie the game 1-1.
The two teams stayed locked at 1-1 until the bottom of the 6th. Schad was hit by a pitch, then pinch run for by Nick Commisso. The loudest ping of the aluminum came next, when Myers drilled a bomb off the wall in left center, making it 2-1 Cobras. The hits kept coming as Chris Hendrick followed that with a hard-hit single of his own, giving the Cobras a 3-1 lead.
Grimes pitcher Tom Steinberg would finish his gem in the 7th, with the Cobras winning 3-1. Steinberg pitched 7 innings, giving up three hits and two walks...while striking out 11.
Grimes will face top-seed Beaver River who beat Sandy Creek 5-2 on Tuesday.
