Early in the high school season many schools play "out-of-class" games to measure how the team is progressing. Jamesville-Dewitt's boys team will do that Thursday when the Red Rams battle Class AA Henninger, that game is part of the now 3-day Peppino's Classic. On Monday though, J-D's girls team also stepped it up in a big way.
The Lady Red Rams (1-0) used a staunch defensive effort to beat Class AA Liverpool 36-29 on Monday, thanks in part to a 20 point effort from Kayleigh Cavanaugh. Katie Dalton's 11 rebounds and Lyteshia Price's 7 points weren't enough for Liverpool who fell to 0-1 on the season.
Elsewhere in girls hoops, Auburn beat Henninger 50-36 and A-P-W beat Lowville 45-18.
In Boys basketball there were some key Class C matchups, including one in the Valley area of Syracuse. Faith Heritage played its second game of the season, and beat Manlius Pebble Hill in convincing fashion 52-35. Luke Last and Tom Woznica led the Saints with 12 points each and Ben Burtis chipped in with 11 points. Elsewhere in Class C, Tully beat Fabius-Pompey 59-33.
As mentioned above, this is the time of year that schools take chances in non-conference games. That was the case for Carthage as they trekked south to take on Rome Free Academy. RFA though, was way too much to handle, beating the Comets 87-37.
