The Section III Finals for football were filled with scoring and close competition Saturday at the Carrier Dome.
It all started with the Herkimer Magicians winning the Class D Sectional Title with a 43-14 win over Sandy Creek in the first game of the day. Austin Mills led the Magicianâ??s offensive attack, running for three touchdowns and throwing for two. One of the throwing touchdowns was a 63 yard pass to Brennan Thompson. Thompson would add another touchdown on the ground later in the game. Eric Johnston would also catch a touchdown pass for Herkimer.
In the afternoon game, the Christian Brothers Academy Brothers would capture the Class AA Sectional Title with a hard fought 19-14 win over the Henninger Black Knights. Neither team had success through the air, leading to the ground game providing most of the offense. Deshawn Salter, Johnathan Stackhouse and J.R. Zazzara all had rushing touchdowns for the Brothers. Justin McGann had Henningerâ??s single offensive touchdown with a 1-yard rushing score. KJ White returned a punt blocked by teammate Brandon Wilbur for a 40 yard touchdown for the Black Knightâ??s second score.
With just two minutes and 37 seconds left in the game, the Carthage Comets drove 90 yards down the field to score a touchdown and convert on the winning two point conversion to beat the Indian River Warriors 21-20 and win the Class A Section III Football championship. The drive was lead by Bailey Wilkinson, who scored two touchdowns on the ground and one through the air. Indian River was lead by Dustin Sharrit, who had two rushing touchdowns in the loss.
