With the first tip off coming at noon and the last one at 7 p.m., the newly formatted Zebra Classic featured five high school basketball games on Sunday.
In the first game, ESM and Fowler battled all the way to the end, but the Spartans were tough down the stretch, going on to win 67-64.
Jamesville-Dewitt played Riverside Academy out of Buffalo, NY in the second game of the day. The Red Rams jumped out to an early lead and stayed there, winning 78-53. Jafar Kinsey scored 21 points in the win.
The Cazenovia and Bishop Grimes girls' teams played a low scoring battle, as the Cobras led just 14-12 at the half. After the Lakers opened up a six-point lead in the second half, the Cobras came striking back, holding the Lakers scoreless in the last few minutes to win 32-28.
The Caz and Grimes boys squads matched up right after that, and made up for the lack of scoring in the girls game, as the Lakers led 39-31 at the half. Caz went on to win 63-53.
In the nightcap, Corcoran and Cortland wrestled for the lead for virtually the entire game. Cortland went on a run towards the end of the first half to take a 41-34 lead going into the locker room. But, the Cougars made a run of their own in the third quarter, taking a 58-57 lead into the third quarter. The Purple Dragons had that 'clutch' gene though, making a three with five seconds to play to win it, 76-74.
It's the 28th year for the event, but the first time the teams competed during the regular season. There were nine scholarship winners from the Section 3 schools in the event.
