West Genesee, Jamesville-DeWitt girls earn Sectional Championships on Saturday

The West Genesee girls basketball team celebrates its first Sectional Championship in 24 years.

Section III's championship weekend is officially here in high school basketball, which tipped off on Saturday morning from inside Allyn Hall Gymnasium at Onondaga Community College.

The first game of the day pinned No. 2 Jamesville-DeWitt against No. 1 Whitesboro. The Red Rams took an early double digit lead, however, the Warriors fought their way back to climb within a single possession.

J-D was able to pull away thanks to the production from star junior Meg Hair, who finished the day with a game-high 17 points. Julia Kelner chipped in 16 points while Jamie Boeheim also had 13.

In the next game from Allyn Hall, No. 1 West Genesee met No. 6 Liverpool in the Class AA Sectional Championship. The Warriors have enjoyed a Cinderella run through the sectional tournament, but met their match on Saturday.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 17-3 advantage due to a flurry of made shots and transition baskets. However, Liverpool would make a run.

The Warriors chipped away in the third quarter, pulling to within a three-point deficit, but never more than that.

West Genesee's Madison (12 points) and Mackenzie Smith (11 points) led the way with double figures in scoring, as the Wildcats broke a 24-year Sectional Championship drought in girls basketball.
