Cazenovia's Beezie Madden out of competition for Olympic individual medal
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- It was a tough day in the saddle for Cazenovia's Beezie Madden at the Olympics on Tuesday.
She and Cortes C had eight faults; a rail on a fence down, and a touch on the water jump. Combined with the four faults from Sunday's qualifier, the 12 faults eliminate her from individual medal competition.
Madden will ride again on Wednesday for the Team Final. Team USA is tied for first place after the other three members of the team - Kent Farrington, Lucy Davis and McLain Ward - had faultless rides Tuesday (Individual rankings include Sunday's scores while the team scores are based solely on Tuesday's rides. The lowest score - in this case Madden's - is dropped from the team's total).
Here's the Team Beezie statement (Tiny is her horse's stable nickname) :
It was a super day for Team USA in Rio today as they qualify to move onto the team final tomorrow with brilliant clear rounds from Kent, Lucy and McLain. Unfortunately, 8 faults today for Beezie and Tiny have bumped them out of individual medal contention, but they are back tomorrow to continue the team competition. Congrats to Kent, Lucy and McLain! Go Team USA!
Tomorrow's Team Final has eight teams competing: Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands, USA, France, Canada, Switzerland and Sweden. www.nbcolympics.com will be streaming it live starting at 9 a.m.
Defending gold medalists, Great Britain, did not make the cut for the Team Final. The Qatari team missed advancing by just one point, which came from a time penalty during Sunday's competition.
