12 hospitalized with minor injuries after car hits 2 vehicles, thruway plaza sidewalk
DEWITT, N.Y. —
Twelve people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries Monday after a car struck other vehicles on the thruway before stopping on a sidewalk at a service plaza in DeWitt.
According to the East Syracuse Fire Department, firefighters were transported to the DeWitt Travel Plaza on Interstate 90's eastbound direction around 3:01 p.m. Monday for a reported motor vehicle accident with injuries.
While units were responding, multiple updates came from Onondaga Fire Control that there were multiple vehicles involved, one car into a building and reports of people trapped.
When arrival units arrived, they found a two-car accident on the interstate and a two-car accident with one hitting the travel plaza building in the parking lot.
Responders to the accident on the highway extricated two patients. Responders to the accident in the parking lot had multiple patients and vehicle hazards. Multiple ambulances were called to the scene. In total, four vehicles were involved and seven patients were treated and transported.
New York State Police said Tuesday that James Katz, 76, from Rockland County, was ticketed for moving from lane unsafely, driving on the shoulder of a controlled access highway and driving on the sidewalk.
