The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office has identified a man who died in a drowning on Oneida Lake at Aero-Marina in the Town of Cicero.

According to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, authorities responded to a report of possible drowning around 7:22 p.m. Tuesday near the marina, which is off Beach Road.

Deputies investigating the incident said witnesses saw the victim in the water and in distress after his kayak overturned. Before authorities arrived, the victim went underwater.

Multiple resources from around the county coordinated in the search for the victim, including Brewerton, South Bay, Liverpool, Tully Fire Departments, Brewerton Ambulance, Onondaga County Emergency Management as well as the Sheriff’s Office Air1 helicopter.

"Cold weather doesn't help, and the darkness," said Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Jon Seeber said. "We had support from Air One and multiple fire departments and countrywide dive team to find the individual."

The victim's body was located a short time later and brought to shore. He was identified Wednesday as 26-year-old Patrick Cafarchio of North Syracuse.

Deputies say it appears Cafarchio was fishing at the time and did not have a personal flotation device on. Prior to May 1st these devices are required by law, according to the sheriff's office.

An autopsy conducted by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office determined Cafarchio's cause of death was accidental by drowning.
