Another former Republican congressman endorses Democrat Brindisi in CNY congressional race
Another former Republican congressman has thrown his support behind Democrat Anthony Brindisi in the race for New York’s 22nd Congressional District.
Former U.S. Rep. Sherwood Boehlert formally endorsed Brindisi over Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney, a campaign spokesperson told CNYCentral on Friday.
Boehlert was once the Oneida County executive before being elected to Congress. He represented parts of central New York and the Mohawk Valley from 1983 until his retirement in 2007. He was considered to be a part of the Republican Party’s moderate wing.
Boehlert is the second former Republican congressman in the area to break with Rep. Tenney and endorse her opponent. Former Rep. Richard Hanna, who preceded Tenney in representing the district from 2011 to 2017, also endorsed Brindisi two weeks ago.
Brindisi has received the support of several other Republican officials throughout the campaign, including state Assemblyman Marc Butler.
The 22nd Congressional District covers Chenango, Cortland, Madison, and Oneida counties, and parts of Oswego, Broome, Herkimer, and Tioga counties. It includes the cities of Binghamton, Utica and Rome.
Election Day is Nov. 6.
