POMPEY, N.Y. -- A barn in Pompey is a total loss after burning to the ground Tuesday afternoon.
When crews arrived on the scene the barn on state route 91 was already engulfed in flames, and the several fire companies that responded to the scene were tasked with making sure the fire didn't spread.
"We protected the house. we sprayed water and foam on the house to protect it to keep it cool so no embers or anything would start that," said Ed Lelakowski, Assistant Chief for the Pompey Hill Fire Department. The house does have some damage, including a few broken windows and some heat and water damage to the side.
The owner of the barn and nearby house tells us someone driving by saw the flames and knocked on her door. Thanks to that Good Samaritan, she says she was able to save her dog from the barn. Unfortunately seven chickens that were in the barn weren't as fortunate.
The homeowner tells us she believes a heat lamp in the barn is what caused the fire, however the official cause is still under investigation.
