Binghamton University student arrested in stabbing death

A Binghamton University student has been charged in the death of a Binghamton University student due to a stabbing.

Authorities said it happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Windham Hall on Binghamton's campus.

Binghamton University said in a tweet Monday morning that one of their students had died from a stabbing.

Police said the victim was 19-year-old engineering student Joao Souza.

Police didn't release any information about the student suspect at a news conference Monday evening. They did report that this does not appear to be a random act.

Any information that you have should be reported to Binghamton University Police at 607-777-2393.

The campus will is currently offering support and counseling services for students and faculty. University officials said all classes on Monday are also canceled.

This is the second violent death the university has seen in the last month-and-a-half. The body of another Haley Anderson of Westbury, was found on March 9 in the off-campus apartment of a fellow student she had briefly dated. She had been strangled. The Broome County district attorney's office is seeking to have that suspect returned from Nicaragua to stand trial.
