Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul kicks off the grand opening of the brand new Central New York welcome center on Wednesday.

It is located on the second floor of Destiny U.S.A. right near the walking bridge.

The center features several products made in Central New York.

"Come experience what we have to offer and then everything else that is wonderful from the nature, the history, the great outdoors in the marketplace," David Aitken, of Destiny U.S.A., said.

Aitken said the mall sees millions of shoppers a year from all over the world.

It is also a top tourist destination in Syracuse.

Tracey Burkey, with Visit Syracuse, said many of those tourists are already fanning out across the region.

She said one of the goals for the welcome center is to advertise Central New York to get even more visitors exploring and spending money in the area.

"Today's traveler wants an entire experience. They want to shop, they want to see what there is to see and do here, but they want to get out and experience it. See what's unique to our destination that other destinations don't have," Burkey said.

Officials report the New York tourism industry is stronger than ever and that includes Central New York.

Around 15.5 million people visited last year, spending more than $265 million.

"Once they've been here and checked out the product, what they can experience and get them out into the community to actually go to some of these attractions, take some farm tours. Just experience everything that this region has to offer," Burkey said.
