Crews battle fire at Syracuse Haulers in DeWitt

Thick smoke could be seen coming from the area Wednesday morning.

A number of fire crews responded to an industrial fire in the Town of DeWitt on Wednesday.

Onondaga County 911 says crews were sent to the Syracuse Haulers location at 6223 Thompson Road just outside East Syracuse.

Photos taken by witnesses show thick black smoke was billowing from the area. The amount of smoke seen coming from the structure was reduced significantly by 12:30 p.m.

The East Syracuse Fire Chief James Brewster said a payloader was used to scoop burning material out of the building, spread it out on the ground outside and spray it down; the burning material was recycled plastic.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation also responded to the scene. According to Brewster, despite the smoke being hazardous, there are no air quality concerns for people near the structure because there isn't enough of it.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, according to Brewster.
