Fire crews from multiple agencies battled an industrial fire in the Town of Van Buren Friday.

Sgt. Jon Seeber from the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office said deputies spotted smoke coming from Bodycote Syracuse Heat Treating Corp. around 1 p.m. Friday. The fire was also called in by employees at the facility on Interstate Island Road.

Multiple fire crews responded to the fire. People and businesses in the area have been advised to stay inside and keep windows closed because of the smoke, Seeber said.

Emergency officials said they're treating the fire as a chemical fire, though they don't yet know exactly what was burning. Authorities are speaking with employees to determine what materials were on fire, officials said.

Officials said one firefighter is being evaluated for a minor injury.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
