Deputies: Student brought handgun to school in New Hartford
NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. —
A student brought a handgun to school in New Hartford on Thursday prompting a lock-out, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's office.
Investigators say Ka’Shawn Carter was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds.
Deputies say the handgun was found just outside the Middle Settlement Academy Campus at the Oneida Herkimer Madison BOCES in the Town of New Hartford. School resource officers were quickly notified, and the school was placed on a lock-out.
Investigators determined that Carter brought the handgun to school on the bus and hid it near a water spigot on the building before going in. Deputies say it was found a short time later by staff.
Investigators say there was no plan to use the handgun at Oneida Herkimer Madison BOCES.
Carter was sent to the Oneida County jail until his arraignment.
The investigation is ongoing.
