Alcohol & speed were factors after driver thrown from car
Alcohol and speed were factors in a crash that ended with the driver thrown from the vehicle and the passenger crawling from the wreckage, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff's office.
The crash happened Saturday night just after 7 p.m. on Maykes Road between Abbey Road and Young Road in the Town of Onondaga, deputies said.
Witnesses were interviewed who reported seeing a dark colored Dodge Dart traveling south on Makyes Road at a high rate of speed, before hearing a loud crash.
The driver, Payton Cardinell, 21, of East Syracuse lost control of his vehicle after speeding, and collided with a utility pole and several trees.
Cardinell and his passenger, Jimerson Lyons, 26, of Nedrow, both suffered serious injuries.
Cardinell was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital and was listed in critical condition as of Sunday morning.
Lyons suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Upstate University Hospital.
Cardinell was charged with driving while intoxicated.
The crash remains under investigation and additional charges are expected.
