State Police identify victim of drowning incident on Skaneateles Lake

Divers searching for missing boater recover body in Skaneateles Lake

State Police are investigating the drowning of a Lafayette man on Skaneateles Lake.

Investigators say it happened around 8:25 a.m. when the man, identified as 38-year-old Joshua D. Sharpe, and a friend were fishing in a boat about 80 yards from shore. Troopers say Sharpe ended up going into the water to swim and at some point he swam underwater and did not resurface. His friend tried to find him under the water several times but could not, troopers said.

Divers and the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office's Air 1 helicopter spent the morning searching for a missing boater on Skaneateles Lake.

The search took place in the waters of the lake near Shady Bend Lane in the Town of Spafford.

Sharpe's body was found about 80 yards from shore in about 25 feet of water, troopers said.

State Police are investigating the man's death. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine Sharpe's official cause of death.
