Relatives say a family of five from Elbridge was involved in a serious accident Friday when an unsecured tire from a tractor trailer smashed through their windshield.

Mike and Heather Griswold, and their three children, Davis, 7, Reed, 6, and Violet, 4, were going to see friends for the weekend in Pennsylvania, according to their relatives.

Pennsylvania State Police said while driving south toward Allentown in Penn Forest Township, the tire came crashing through the Griswold's windshield, hitting Heather in the head and then Davis in the third row of the SUV. Heather and Davis were airlifted to the hospital. Troopers said Mike had minor injuries and the other two children were not hurt, but were taken to the hospital.

"They are both fighting very hard to heal from injuries. The have several surgeries, hospital stay and recovery ahead of them," according to an online fundraiser set up for the Griswolds.

Family close to the Griswolds are asking for "thoughts and prayers for their loved ones."
