Oneida man taken into custody after 8 hour standoff

Police were called to a home on Williams Street in Oneida.

An Oneida man is in police custody after a standoff that lasted several hours Thursday night into Friday morning.

Oneida Police say around 7:30 p.m. Thursday officers were called to the 200 block of Williams Street for a report of a man who was threatening to kill himself. Police say the man was alone in his home but had access to guns and was drinking.

Oneida Police and Madison County Sheriffâ??s Deputies surrounded the home and began to talk to the man, trying to get him to come out. After he did not respond, the county SWAT team entered the home and took the man into custody around 3:15 a.m. Friday.

Police say the man was taken to Rome Hospital to be evaluated. No official word on his identity, or if any charges are pending.
