Great Northern Macy's among dozens of locations closing by the end of 2017
CLAY, N.Y. -- Macy's says its location at the Great Northern Mall is one of dozens of stores it plans to shutter by the end of 2017.
The Great Northern location opened in 1989 and currently employs 55 people. So far there is no word on when exactly the store will close its doors for the final time, other than it will happen at some point before year's end.
Macy's will also close two other stores in New York state: one at the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City and another at the Marketplace Mall in Rochester, according to a release by the company Wednesday.
Macy's says the closures are part of its effort to "streamline its store portfolio, intensify cost efficiency efforts and execute its real estate strategy."
"While we are pleased with the strong performance of our highly developed online business, as well as the progress we have made on selling and visual presentation programs and expense reduction initiatives in 2016, we continue to experience declining traffic in our stores where the majority of our business is still transacted," Terry J. Lundgren, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc. said in the company's release.
The company previously closed its location at the ShoppingTown Mall back in 2015.
