For the first time, Helping Hounds Dog Rescue will host a bottle and can donation drive to benefit Guiding Eyes for the Blind.

Guiding Eyes trains service dogs for people who are blind or visually impaired and many program recipients live in Central New York.

After CNYCentral connected Tonya Corujo, who is legally blind, with Helping Hounds, the event came together for Saturday, April 24.

The day after also marks National Guide Dog Day.

The donation drive will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bags of empty bottles and cans can be dropped of at Helping Hounds in the parking lot at 7268 Caswell Ave. in North Syracuse.

All collected bottles and cans will be turned in at a redemption center to make a donation to Guiding Eyes.

Corujo and a few other community members who have Guiding Eyes services dogs will be at the drive.

According to the Guiding Eyes website, the group's mission is to provide guide dogs to people with a vision loss. "We are passionate about connecting exceptional dogs with individuals for greater independence."
